Training Tips 101: Anticipatory Drop or "Flinch", Shots Hitting Low on Target

Updated: Jul 26

Why would someone hit low on their target? Humans are not conditioned for big explosions in their face! It happens because anticipating the recoil and noise of the gun firing can cause someone to drop the muzzle downward just before the shot is fired until they are properly trained and conditioned.

Anticipatory drop, or "a flinch," is a very common problem. There is a subconscious reaction to counteract that expected upward movement of the gun, and this often results in shots hitting low on the target because we drive the gun down. So, how can we fix it?

Get back to dry firing, practice everything with an unloaded gun, and focus on making sure your sights do not move during your trigger press. Now head to the range with dummy rounds (fake rounds) intermixed with live rounds. Have someone else load them so you don't know when they are coming.

It is very important to watch your gun sights when you hit these dummy rounds and see what is happening. You will see your gun drop, and you will see the movement that's happening without your awareness. By retraining your brain that maybe there will be an explosion and maybe there won't, you will start to work that flinch out and get things back on target.

If you would like accelerate your training, and get a full evaluation of your shooting skills, we are always available for private lessons.
